Two fishermen were arrested off the coast of Samal Island for alleged illegal fishing activities during the closed fishing season and for using gear harmful to marine life.
The suspects, a 45-year-old resident of Samal Island and a 44-year-old resident of Davao City, were caught fishing in the waters off Barangay Poblacion in Kaputian, Samal Island.
Personnel of the Davao Maritime Police Station were patrolling the area when they caught the two men fishing without a permit. Fishing is also prohibited in the region during closed fishing season, which will be in effect until August 2025.
The fishermen allegedly used a ring net, a type of fishing gear known to be destructive to marine life.
Seized from the suspects were the fishing net and the motorized fishing boat.
The suspects will face charges for violation of the Philippine Fisheries Code (RA 10654).
